Other drivers tried to alert the Brighton man on Tuesday as smoke came out of the 1992 Toyota LandCruiser.
They flashed their lights and tried to get the car to pull over.
The driver eventually stopped on the Snow Road at Whorouly about 3.30pm and the vehicle was engulfed by flames.
A gas cylinder ruptured and nearby bushland caught on fire.
Senior Constable Shane Hughes said the road was blocked for more than two hours, with VicRoads needed to repair the melted road surface.
“Firefighters were on the scene and put it all out,” he said.
“The car was completely burnt out but there were no injuries. There will be no police action.
“We’re just happy that everyone was safe, and it’s a timely reminder coming up to the holiday season for people to get their cars regularly checked by a mechanic.”
