Next weekend, the 31st annual Albury-Wodonga Doll, Bear and Hobby Show continues that goal with two days of competitions, exhibitions, demonstrations and traders at Lavington’s Mirambeena Community Centre.
And this year’s event includes two other exhibiting groups, the Bricks On The Border Lego enthusiasts and the Murray Railway Modellers.
Doll, Bear and Hobby Show president Margaret Grigsby, treasurer Chris Jones and secretary Ruth Jack said they welcomed the added attractions.
“Not everybody can play sport, but it’s getting people into hobbies and out there mixing with people, like-minded people,” Mrs Grigsby said.
“It’s all good for the head space, so to speak.”
Bricks On The Border secretary Geoffrey Reid said he’d been a Lego enthusiast since 1999.
“I love Star Wars, love building Lego,” he said.
“And after the accident I had that put me in a wheelchair, I found that using Lego was a good pain reliever because you’re concentrating on building something and it takes your mind off the pain.”
Competitors and traders will travel to attend the show, from as far away as Melbourne, Echuca, Sydney, NSW central coast, Canberra and Warrnambool.
Entries include embroidered articles, framed pieces, knitted and crochet toys, patchwork quilts, cot blankets and card making.
Ms Jones said the traders often brought items people needed for their projects but couldn’t source locally.
“It’s not like the old days when it was just porcelain dolls and bears,” she said.
“We want to keep diversifying and keep up with the fashion of what’s out there.”
The Doll, Bear and Hobby Show will again support Carevan, with last year’s event raising $2000 for the Border charity.
Carevan chief executive Stacey Franklin said the money would go towards daily expenses and the ongoing quest for a new van.
“Obviously it’s really important, making an impact on the community where you live,” she said.
“Them approaching us is a great little fit.”
