Alvi Pua, 24, of Deer Park, was arrested on November 16 after speeding away from police along the Hume Freeway between Benalla and Albury.
Officers who stopped him across the border in NSW at 7.45am discovered Pua, two adult women and a young child in the stolen Suburu, which was displaying manufactured number plates.
They also found a 60-centimetre machete and knuckle-dusters in the car.
He reappeared in Wodonga Magistrates Court on Wednesday to hear his sentence.
Magistrate Ian Watkins said the crimes were serious and warranted time in custody.
He sentenced Pua to seven months in jail, minus the 27 days already served, plus placed him on a 12-month community corrections order and disqualified him from driving for two years.
“Being caught speeding at that speed with your own child on board puts that child in danger and other members of the community,” Mr Watkins said.
Pua also admitted assaulting his pregnant girlfriend – one of the women who had been in the car – by punching and kicking her on December 1.
“That was the behaviour towards the mother of your children … The treatment of your partner was nothing short of disgraceful,” Mr Watkins said.
“It is of some concern that Corrections found your behaviour was ‘learned and entrenched’.”
The Corrections report stated Pua was a high risk of reoffending, but Mr Watkins said he believed he had prospects of rehabilitation.
Pua looked up towards the ceiling, breathed deeply and had tears rolling down his face after the sentence was handed down.
