The 56-year-old fell at Walwa on Tuesday at an estimated speed of about 12 metres a second after his glider failed.
The impact with trees near Sandy Creek Road caused compound fractures, exposing bones in his leg, and he was flown to hospital in Canberra.
The Bowral man underwent surgery and is recovering.
Senior Constable Justin Tyres said another paraglider witnessed the crash and helped the victim, who has flown for about 10 years.
“He’s extremely lucky to be alive,” he said.
The victim had failed to deploy his emergency parachute.
Senior Constable Tyres said it was an accident needing no further investigation.
