The city’s council on Monday night approved Aurora Way and Jack Hore Way, both on the northern flank of the former railway precinct in central Wodonga.
Aurora Way will run from Smythe Street to South Street on land which will be used for housing.
The name reflects the train that ran between Sydney and Melbourne from 1962 to 1986, with councillor Danny Lowe comparing it to V/Line.
“I noticed that it actually had a better efficiency rate and a speed rate than what our local rail does today,” Cr Lowe said.
Jack Hore Way will be formed through the renaming of Bond Street, which runs between High Street and Church Street.
A previous street honouring the former shire president, Jack Hore Place, linked High Street and Hovell Street before it was renamed Elgin Boulevard in 2002.
Mr Hore’s sons Colin and Ross were in the gallery for Monday night’s meeting and welcomed the outcome after lobbying the council for many years.
“It was like pushing manure up hill for a long time, so it’s good we’ve finally got somewhere,” Colin said.
He noted Bond Street had been named after a store rather than a person and it was close to where his father lived at 70 High Street.
Jack Hore, who died in 1970, was president of Wodonga Shire over four different periods between 1941 and 1965.
“One of his big aims was developing out of Struggle Town and there’s not too many that say that now because it’s started to put its head up,” Colin said.
Mayor Anna Speedie acknowledged it had been a “long journey” for Mr Hore’s family.
“I’m looking forward to finally seeing this street put back on our map,” she said.
“Can I thank the family for being so patient, for working with us and being accommodating wherever possible, thank you very much.”
Cr Speedie said public art noting the Hore deeds would appear at the renamed street.
