NSW police said the man, 24, his brother and three friends jumped into the water about 9.45pm Wednesday for a swim.
“The 24-year-old man entered deeper water and was not seen to surface,” police said.
Emergency services were contacted and began a grid search but could not find the man.
The search was suspended owing to poor visibility and will resume Thursday morning.
Officers from Albury Local Area Command, Volunteer Rescue Association, State Emergency Service and Rural Fire Service took part in the search.
Police said anyone with information should contact Albury Police Station on (02) 6023 9299 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
