No, but you can call her Shirley.
Old film quotes aside, a Thurgoona resident wants to gauge interest in forming a social club of women who share that name.
Shirley Smith, 83, put a message to that effect in The Border Mail’s community diary and already has “four definites” for her planned morning tea later this month.
“The thing is, you must be a Shirley to belong to it,” she said. “Usually they’re all round about my age because they were named after Shirley Temple.”
Shirley clubs are not new, with the first group beginning in Perth more than 21 years ago when 62 Shirleys attended a function sparked by a newspaper article.
Mrs Smith had belonged to a Bega group previously and looked around for an Albury-Wodonga chapter when she moved here in December.
“They’re just a fun club, we’d usually go out for lunch once a month or any activities that might catch our eye,” she said.
“There’s a lot of laughter, and it’s just a social event, really.
“I’ve always enjoyed it and we’ll see how we go.”
With a motto of fun, food and friendship, Shirley clubs have also held conventions in capital cities and expanded to include groups in the US and New Zealand. The official club colours are purple and aqua.
“Some of them have numbers, Shirley 1, Shirley 2,” Mrs Smith said. “I’ve never been in the numbers game but I’m just going to see what people want, really and we’ll just take it from there. It just takes a few people to keep these sort of things going.”
