Wirruna puts leading sires in bull sale
The Wirruna Autumn Bull and Female sale will be held on property at “Spring Valley”, Holbrook, by the Locke family on Wednesday March 14.
Stud principal Ian Locke said this year’s sale represents a unique opportunity to purchase some leading Poll Hereford Sires that have had semen sold, not only within Australia, but also to overseas Hereford populations in New Zealand, South America and Europe.
“Of the sixty-six bull lots offered in this sale, eight are proven sires that have been used over the Wirruna breeding herd.
“Six of those have had semen sold domestically and three of them have had semen sold internationally as well,” he said.
The renowned Wirruna Katnook K74 will sell as lot 1.
“This bull’s semen rights are owned and marketed by ABS Australia where they have seen thousands of semen straws sold in South America, particularly to Brazil, and to Europe and the UK,” said Ian.
“The bull puts together that rare combination of carcase quality and quantity with his eye muscle area and marbling EBVs ranking in the top one per cent of the breed, as well as a top one per cent ranking for the dollar Index values.
Ian said the physical possession of Katnook will give a unique opportunity for a potential purchaser to add profitable trait mix, superb structure and muscle conformation into their breeding program.
The top of the drop ‘L’ sire also sells at Lot 7. Named Wirruna Ledger L285, he has semen collected for and marketed in New Zealand and Australia.
“This fellow is a clean fronted bull, well fleshed and carries top one per cent dollar Indices, top one per cent for marbling, scrotal size for fertility and 400 day growth”, Ian said.
“It is rare to see a number of the breeds top bulls, all offered in the one sale. Nevertheless, there is also strength throughout the catalogue of bulls and breeding cows from top to bottom with Wirruna’s clear focus of providing top-end genetics to the commercial beef producer at an affordable price.”

Le Martres – Great body and ‘butt’ shape here
The Le Martres annual bull sale will feature an impressive and significant lineup of sons by two important sires bred at the stud using well selected Australian genetics.
“The two polled sires Le Martres Governor (G70) & Le Martres Black Jenkins (J93) are proving to be very popular in the market-place, as their sons offer great body shape and, in particular 'butt' shape,” said Leon Martin, stud principal.
“These bulls also come with the renowned Le Martres 'good manners',” he said.
“Both sires are bred from outstanding Le Martres cows and provide the option for buyers to keep their own replacement heifers and build the body shape of their own cow herd.”
The Martin family operated a dairy farm at Staghorn Flat for 40 years until 1975 before establishing the Le Martres Limousin Stud in 1988.
Les Martres Limousin Stud will hold their sale at Rosemount Farm, Table Top, on March 9.
They now breed French and Australian pure breed Limousin cattle with exceptional quality carcases, various coat colors (apricot, black, blue and strawberry) and horned or polled, including ‘French Pure Polled’.
All cattle are selected for good manners and natural performance and muscling off grass. The cow herd is annually indexed for high milking ability.
“Our sale on March 9 will offer buyers the chance to ‘get with the strength’ and secure some exciting Limousin genetics,” said Leon.
Witherswood putting on a stellar line up at sale
Witherswood Angus are having their annual sale on property at Taminick, via Glenrowan, on Tuesday March 20 at 1pm.
This follows on from their first ever female sale last October which saw breeders from all states secure females in a sale that achieved 100 per cent clearance rate.
“That was a big day,” said John Woodruff. “It was the biggest crowd we’d had in 18 years. Of the 66 cows and calves sold the top price was $11,500 with an average of $5854.”
“We will offer 72 bulls at our upcoming sale,” he said.
“Among them will be some of the first sons of record breaking sires of Millah Murrah Kingdom K35 (12 sons sell) and Millah Murrah Klooney K42 (14 sons sell).
“Kingdom K35 has been in use at Witherswood for three joining seasons and in our sale at Lot 25 we have an outstanding son Witherswood Kingdom M0332. He is a definite stud sire prospect and a real chip of the old block.
“When you compare him to his sire we believe it demonstrates a very compelling message regarding Kingdom’s K35 ability to transmit his superb structure and phenotype.”
In the sale there are also power bulls by Ascot Hallmark and Millah Murrah Jackpot (that should produce great replacement females), also MAR innovation, EF complement, Matauri Reality and Braveheart of Stern NZ, who are more moderate framed with extra thickness.
“We are looking forward to catching up with clients old and new on sale day next month. We welcome prior inspection of the bulls and can provide additional information prior the sale if required,” said John.

A new era for Rennylea
The March 13 bull sale marks a milestone at Rennylea as it is stud manager Peter Govan’s last sale. The long time manager of the Rennylea properties at Culcairn will be hanging up his hat with the Corrigan’s, but not venturing too far away.
Lucinda and Bryan Corrigan said Peter’s involvement in the business over the past 17 years has had a profound influence on bull production and marketing.
