The 42-year-old Wodonga man died in the fatal crash after running off Kiewa East Road at about 11.30am.
He had been driving west towards Tangambalanga and Wodonga when he lost control downhill, around a left-hand bend.
His Holden Commodore, which was towing a trailer, ran off the road to the right, hitting some smaller trees and crashing through a fence.
Multiple people in the area immediately called triple zero to alert emergency services of the crash and tried to conduct CPR on the man before paramedics arrived.
Sergeant Tim Mooney said Wodonga Highway Patrol were investigating the cause of the crash.
“He’s ended up off the roadway into the trees,” he said.
“Paramedics worked on him for some time, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.”
He was the only occupant of the car and no other vehicles were involved.
There were no witnesses to the crash on the quiet road, making the police task of piecing together what happened very difficult.
“It’s a mess - it’s obviously got airborne, possibly has rolled. Every single panel on the vehicle is damaged,” Sergeant Mooney said.
“The fatality rate is slightly above what it was last year, so that’s a concern.
“It’s a message for drivers to remain vigilant when on the roads.
Police examined tyre marks and debris left on the road, as they tried to work out what happened.
Police, fire brigades and ambulance officers were all on the scene and the road remained open, with a reduced speed limit.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has further information is urged to contact Wodonga police on (02) 6049 2600 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
