The Bulldogs trailed by 16 at three-quarter time and had kicked just nine majors, but restricted the visitors to only one in the 16.15 (111) to 14.8 (92) win.
“It’s obviously good to get a win early, there were obviously times where we were under a fair bit of pressure,” Wodonga coach Zac Fulford said.
“Probably the second half of the game we used the ball better going forward.”
Wodonga lost 23 players over summer, but one of the few profile players to stay in Jackson Heagney-Steart had a sublime last quarter.
“He was sensational, I think he had seven marks and 10 or 11 possessions in the last 20 minutes,” Fulford enthused.
“When Rovers went forward, he was the one holding them up a fair bit.”
Kiewa Sandy Creek recruit Jacob Barber, Shaun Flanigan and Harry Pole also played well.
