The roadworks employee had been using the profiling machine on the Beechworth-Wodonga Road at Wooragee on Monday morning.
The device drove over soft soil on the road edge, causing it to roll about 8.50am and land in a ditch.
The 62-year-old Baddaginnie man was trapped inside the machine for about 30 minutes before being removed by paramedics and firefighters.
WorkSafe was notified of the incident, which occurred near Star Lane.
Acting Sergeant Justin Foots said the incident was not considered a motor vehicle crash as the machine was not registered and was operating in a designated roadworks site.
“He appeared to have minor injuries,” he said of the machine operator.
“He was able to walk from the vehicle after being freed from it by the paramedics.
“He was taken to hospital.”
Recent rainfall had caused the edge of the road to become soft, Acting Sergeant Foots said.
The works started in December and are expected to be finished by the end of July.
A Wodonga-bound turning lane is being installed between Edmondson Lane and Star Lane.
