Kyle Jon Lyons had managed to avoid Albury police for a while, until an overdose on a cocktail of drugs brought him to their attention.
Lyons had gone to the victim’s Plover Street home about 11pm on September 23, 2016.
He had owed her drug debts and they got into a verbal altercation.
The 30-year-old demanded to know where she kept her ice and took off with about 28 grams of the drug, along with a phone and laptop worth $1500.
The victim complained to a fellow drug dealer Lyons was living with the following day.
She claimed she hadn’t heard from Lyons for a few days and the victim reported the offence to police on September 26.
He was found on the floor of a Jacaranda Street home about 8.30am the following day, in cardiac arrest, having overdosed on a mix of drugs.
Police found about 23 grams of the drug in his sunglasses case.
He was taken to Albury hospital in a serious condition and was charged with drug supply.
The 30-year-old had warrants out for his arrest from a firearms incident dating back to 2012 at the time.
The victim of the drug theft identified Lyons last May, leading to serious charges.
Detectives had formed a strike force to investigate drug supply in the area when the ice theft took place.
Police had initially alleged he was armed at the time and had stolen about $26,000 in cash from the dealer, but the charges did not proceed to sentence.
When questioned by police, Lyons blamed the meth.
“That wasn’t me,” he said.
“I was on drugs.
“I was heavily abusing ice.”
Lyons was jailed in the Albury District Court on Friday for three years with an 18-month minimum.
Judge Michael King said he had a lengthy record, consistent with a person “having significant difficulty with complying with the law”, and noted he hadn’t shown remorse.
He will be eligible for parole on November 29.
