- Albury-based Frenchman Jean-Francois Rupp launched Alpine Nature Experience at Mount Hotham last June. He builds on the 2017 Snowshoe to Fondue experience, with Igloo to Skidoo, offering overnight stays in eco-domes in the snow. Equipped with wood heaters and cosy beds, this experience includes dinner and skidoo transfer.
- Australia’s highest altitude craft brewery, Blizzard Brewery at Dinner Plain, has joined forces in 2018 to launch a new High Plains draught on tap this winter at the High Plains Hotel.
- Falls Creek food highlights. A new fit-out for The Frying Pan Inn will include a menu change and new outdoor area. Cloud 9 has a new menu, including wood-fired pizzas and smoked meat offers, as well as a new mezzanine bar. Dickie Knees will transform into a taqueria this winter. The team behind Easy Eats has transformed Gateway into the new Brewhouse, and will have a snack shack in Slalom Plaza.
- A new $9 million chairlift, Eagle Express, is a high-speed fully detachable quad chair by Leitner-Poma, making reaching the back side of Falls Creek resort faster.
- Children’s entertainment powerhouse, Nickelodeon, will team up with Falls Creek to sponsor the children’s ski and snowboard programs this winter. Kids aged 3 to 5 can play with the Paw Patrol Puppies in Snow Club, those 6 to 12 will hang with SpongeBob, and for teenagers, TMNT take over the Ride Tribe.
- Bright food highlights. Elm Dining offers contemporary Australian fare in the cosy house formerly home to Simone’s of Bright. A new roastery Sixpence Coffee in Wills Street serves some of the High Country’s best brew.
- Darker Days at the Bright Brewery, the second annual mid-winter family-friendly festival on June 30, features dark beers from craft brewers of the High Country Brewery Trail, live music and a ceremonial bonfire.
- Boutique accommodation at historic Rutherglen winery, Mount Ophir, continues to evolve under the thoughtful direction of the Brown siblings.
- The Old Gaol Cafe, in a funky Airstream caravan in the courtyard of the Beechworth Gaol, serves Sixpence Coffee and homemade snacks.
- The King Valley Balloon Festival takes off this Queen’s Birthday weekend.
