Albury-Wodonga Boomerang Bags celebrated the change by stepping up their sewing to meet an expected influx of demand.
Andrea Palmer said the retailers’ decision was a long time coming.
“It’s absolutely fantastic that retailers are listening to consumers,” she said.
“There’s been a big push from consumers saying no, this is not good for the environment.
“We put the call out last week for more volunteers because we know we will be absolutely swamped and won’t be able to keep up with the demand.”
Mrs Palmer hopes the large corporations will follow in the footprints of smaller retailers like East Albury IGA and support Boomerang Bags.
She said the nation-wide movement created a community, helped the environment and taught people new skills.
Both major supermarkets will offer reusable or recyclable plastic bags for 15 cents.
