Producers of the film Glenrowan have announced Callan McAuliffe, an Australian actor who featured in The Walking Dead, is in talks to play the main character.
The announcement has been made on the 138th anniversary of the bushrangers arrest, ahead of the movie’s planned shoot in 2019.
McAuliffe also appeared in 2016’s bushranger movie The Legend of Ben Hall, produced by the same team working on Glenrowan.
While the story of Ned Kelly is not new, director and co-writer Matthew Holmes has promised the lead role will be portrayed with a fresh perspective.
“We wanted to create something different from the standard ‘life story’ biopic,” he said.
“We’re approaching this story of a complex young man without forcing labels onto him such as hero, victim or psychopath. This realistic approach allows Ned to be shown exactly as he was: a person with both strong virtues and deep flaws.”
It is expected some filming will take place around Wangaratta and Glenrowan.
The movie will be set over a 42-hour period of the Glenrowan siege.
Co-writer Aidan Phelan said it was a chance to provide answers about who Ned Kelly really was and how he impacted the region.
“This was not just about Ned Kelly, this is also the story of a tiny community suddenly swept up in this monumental standoff between outlaws and the police,” he said.
