Member for Benambra Bill Tilley made a $200,000 election commitment on Saturday to repair and resurface the club’s existing court, upgrade lighting and build a second court to cater for the Upper Murray league club’s five teams.
“The Blues have a strong presence in the Upper Murray league with five netball sides as well as an oversubscribed junior program,” Mr Tilley said.
“Sadly, the quality of the netball facilities fail to match those standards with one concrete court where teams train in tandem under poor lighting and warm-up on match day on the entry road and gravel car park.”
Mr Tilley, who has just one known challenger to date in the election, independent Jacqui Hawkins, said clubs like Cudgewa were doing their best with sub-standard facilities.
“Everywhere I go in the electorate there are sporting clubs doing incredible jobs with limited resources and outdated facilities,” he said.
“Clubs who are desperate for support.
“But Labor, under Daniel Andrews, has abandoned grassroots sport in favour of a $225 million gift to the AFL to develop a ballroom at Etihad Stadium and interest bearing loans to clubs in regional Victoria.”
Labor has to date not announced a candidate in Benambra or other North East electorates, Murray Valley and Euroa, which are both held by National Party duo, Tim McCurdy and Steph Ryan, respectively.
The Border Mail has sought an update on Labor’s plans for the electorates.
Mr Tilley has also made a pledge for $250,000 to fix the roof of the Corryong Memorial Hall.
