The council last week agreed to publicly notify its intention to sell the aerodrome and call for submissions from potential buyers.
It has fielded calls previously about selling the airport with a possible sale coming after the Qantas flying school bid when Moira joined with Albury, Federation and Berrigan councils in putting together a joint proposal which didn’t make the short-list.
Council’s corporate general manager Simon Rennie said recreational, agricultural and general aviation activity were among its main uses.
“A privatised facility would better meet the growing demands of tourism, export and training opportunities,” he said.
Yarrawonga-Mulwala strategic development team spokesman Doug Evans’ said he personally supported council testing the waters.
“The first step in their view would be seeing who is out there,” he said.
“The airport has the capacity to be taken to another level with land available for another strip to be built.”
In a report presented to council, Moira chief executive Mark Henderson said: “Selling the aerodrome represents a further and logical step in transitioning the asset from public to private ownership.
Current freehold owners within the aerodrome would be well placed to form a syndicate to purchase the aerodrome and build on their investment in the site.”
