Now that the recreation grounds in each town have been locked in as locations, Greater Hume Council engineering director Greg Blackie said design would get underway.
“We have a few people we’ll be consulting with; locals as well as a couple people who have experience with skate parks,” he said.
“We asked for comment on what people would like to see in the skate parks when we put out our engagement guides.”
There are 24-hour toilets at both grounds, though the skate parks will not be intended for night use and there are no plans to install additional lighting.
The state government funding, just under $180,000 for each, is likely to extend to ancillary facilities and some shade structure if needed. Council received 120 responses to plans for the north ward.
Three sites were put out for feedback for Culcairn – Eric Thomas Park, Gordon Street near the water tower, and the recreation ground – while only one site was deemed suitable for Jindera.
Support for the recreation ground and Eric Thomas Park nearly tied with one more vote (56 all up) in favour of the former, which was recommended at Wednesday’s council meeting and unanimously supported.
“The advantage of the parks being at the recreation grounds is that families being there for footy or netball, can let their kids jump on the skate park at the same time,” Mr Blackie said.
“The kids in these towns have been looking forward to this for a long time.
“We’d love to get a contractor on board before Christmas, with works to start early in 2019.”
