The bridge at Culcairn, which has been unused for many years, does not meet vertical clearance requirements.
While it’s suggested a plaque commemorating the footbridge be installed, the Culcairn Development Committee has also requested the bridge not be dismantled.
Member Kirsty Wilksch told councillors on Wednesday much of the town’s rail infrastructure was gone.
“The pedestrian foot bridge is one of the main structures now left,” she said.
“We request council support us in asking ARTC to take down the bridge in such a manner so that parts of it can be retained and gifted to us … until a community project can be found for it.
“This is part of Culcairn’s heritage and it may seem like a small thing now, but in the future this could be something we wished we’d kept.”
A recommendation put forward by Cr Tony Quinn that Council write to the appropriate rail authority to consider the idea was passed.
