Team Mount Beauty, one of the oldest clubs in Australia, will use a $4000 Sports and Recreation Victoria grant for increasing female participation in sport to run the Spoke Sisters Networking Tour.
Secretary Turi Berg said the grant followed previous funding to build more inclusive trails in their park.
“For the last 30 years we’ve been running events, maintaining trails in the mountain bike parks and more recently increased signage and mapping,” she said.
“International riders have come out of our club.
“There’s more men than women riding and we want to try to promote more women getting involved.
“We have a couple of active female members and thought it would be great to connect with others.”
A downhill ride will take place at Mount Beauty (November 17), Woolshed Falls (February 2) and Nail Can Hill (April 13), followed by a networking lunch.
Ms Berg, who has been mountain biking for 20 years – and for the last six in Mount Beauty – said gravity biking had grown in popularity.
“Shuttling is very popular, and on the day a bus will be taking us up the hill, which opens up for women who don’t feel they are psychically fit enough to ride up and still be able to enjoy the descent,” Ms Berg said.
"Mountain Bike Australia has a representative who is keen to come along to at least one of these sessions.
“It’s great to get grants like this and be able to do things you don’t necessarily have the funding for, particularly being a small club.”
