The federal government announced on Friday it would bankroll half of the $7.2 million project which would see another crossing established at Grubben Road.
It will also include a 1km re-alignment of the Olympic Highway.
“This will provide suitable stacking distance for heavy vehicles between the railway line and the Olympic Highway and will provide a more efficient and safer access point to the grain storage facility,” Farrer MP Sussan Ley said.
Deputy Prime Minister and infrastructure, transport and regional development minister Michael McCormack said the project secured funding via the heavy vehicle productivity and safety program.
It provides funding to local councils and state and territory governments to help fund works designed to improve the safety and efficiency of important heavy vehicle routes.
“Around Australia we are investing in helping people get home sooner and safer, no matter where they live,” Mr McCormack said.
Another successful project was the reconstruction, realignment and widening of 1.2km of Drummond Street and 3.1km of Boree Creek Road and Richmond Street in the Federation Council area.
It will receive $640,000 towards a total cost of $1.33 million.
The NSW government has been approached to fund the balance of the Henty project.
Member for Albury Greg Aplin’s office has confirmed the project is under consideration as part of a growing local communities funding round with an application for $3.3 million submitted.
Successful applicants could be announced within a month.
Greater Hume Shire is also putting $500,000 towards the project.
“For this project to come to fruition we really need the state government to provide $3.3 million,” Greater Hume general manager Steve Pinnuck said.
“We’ve presented the full business case and as far as we know that is currently under assessment.
“We would be hopeful now that the federal government has committed to funding its share of the project it will provide the impetus for the state government to come along with their commitment.”
