The four-storey apartment building including 37 two and three-bedroom rooms, a conference area, outdoor terrace and a gym have been designed to replace the old shopping complex in a project worth $12 million.
Plans were this week released to the public.
They reveal what developers have called a “modern aesthetic facade” with 40 car parks and space for bicycles.
“The development proposes accommodation choice and additional opportunities for short and long-term visitations close to the Wangaratta CBD,” the planning application stated.
“The proposed development represents confidence and investment in the growth and sustainability in the Wangaratta region.
“This development is a $12 million investment into construction, tourism, hospitality, community and culture and provides a significant and ongoing financial injection into the region’s economy through employment, tourism, and modern business facilities and accommodation.”
But the apartments will not have a restaurant or cafe attached and no liquor licence, unless one is specially applied for during an event.
“The existing shopping plaza development has no cultural heritage significance and does not positively contribute to the heritage values of the precinct. Demolition of the shopping plaza will remove that detraction and restore values in the streetscape,” the application stated.
