The band are touring for the 20th anniversary of their iconic debut album SUMO, and they’re pulling out all the stops.
Sarah McLeod and the crew are playing SUMO in full, on every date of the tour, plus a selection of their greatest hist from their other albums Jet Age and Rock Music, as well as EPs Eight Step Rail and Love and Violence.
They’ll be on stage for more than two hours – which is why the band will never be doing a run of shows like this again.
For McLeod in particular, the last couple of years have been incredibly busy.
After the band reunited in 2016, they’ve barely had time to catch their breath.
They’ve toured with Van Halen, Aerosmith and Bryan Adams, been inducted to the South Australian Music Hall of Fame, joined fellow Aussie legends Jebediah, Killing Heidi and Dallas Frasca and Grinspoon on another tour – while McLeod shared the role of St Jimmy in Green Day’s American Idiot musical with Adalita from Magic Dirt and Grinspoon’s Phil Jamieson.
McLeod said bring their debut album back as a full-length live show had been an incredible experience for everyone in the band.
“We’re doing two hour-long sets – we play Sumo in its entirety, then we play a whole other set which is basically just all the best songs we’ve ever had from every other record,” she said.
“We’ve reworked songs where the arrangement will be different, there’s parts with crowd interactions, parts where I’m on piano, it’s like a full stadium show that we’ve packed into the pub rock circuit. “
After a lengthy hiatus, McLeod said getting the band back together had been an immensely rewarding experience for everyone.
“I always think of the song I’m going to write next and live for the future, but when we put the best songs together, back to back, especially with the crowd singing along, I realised how strong those songs are and that’s really good feedback,” she said.
“I’ve been excited about hearing them all back to back because we’ve never had a greatest hits album.”
