Olympian and Commonwealth Games representative Heming Hu’s North East tour commenced at Wangaratta on Wednesday, before moving to Shepparton on Thursday and Albury on Friday, with a trip to Yarrawonga on Saturday to round out his visit.
Hu, 24, took up the sport at six years of age, but admitted it wasn’t by choice.
“My parents pushed me in, but they found me a coach who made me love the sport and I haven’t looked back since,” he said.
“The Commonwealth Games was really good because I played a lot of matches in front of a home crowd and my parents also.
“The Olympic Games was special in a different way because I saw my idols like Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Usain Bolt – it was an experience I’ll never forget.”
Hu features in an exhibition at the Yarrawonga-Mulwala Show on Saturday.
Show president and table tennis player John Wright admitted it will be a fantastic opportunity to see a top player in the region.
“We wrote a letter asking if we could get some Commonwealth Games players to come down to the show and they got back to me and said they could get Heming Hu,” Wright said.
Wright represents Victoria at next week’s national titles in Bendigo.
Table Tennis Victoria CEO Dennis Makaling also visited the region with Hu.
