Police say the pilot was approaching the airport just after 3.45pm when the grey and white, three-bladed drone was seen about 100-feet below.
The aircraft landed safely without a collision.
The Albury airport control tower, Civil Aviation Safety Authority and other aircraft were all alerted to the drone in restricted airspace.
Officers from Murray River Police District attended and conducted patrols, but the drone operator could not be located.
Drone operators have been warned they must keep drones at least 5.5 kilometres away from controlled aerodromes such as Albury Airport and must not fly drones higher than 120 metres above the ground.
Police are appealing for anyone who may have been flying a drone in the Mungabareena Reserve Area, or anyone with information, to contact police via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
