Asked if he believed independents could take away some of Labor’s votes in the November election, he put his support behind Upper House MP Jaclyn Symes and Ovens Valley candidate Kate Doyle.
“People can make their own judgement, but I’m here to advocate for those two outstanding Labor women,” he said.
“Victorians will make that choice and we’ll either move forward and keep building and keep delivering for every single Victorian, or we’ll go another way.”
Ms Doyle said she felt for opponent Tim McCurdy and his family after he was committed to stand trial over allegations of fraud, but it was time for a new MP for a changing demographic.
“We’ve had the legacy of Ken Jasper, who was a very well resected man,” she said.
“I think the Nationals, maybe they’re not adjusting to the change.”
