“Border Community Energy” was officially announced on Monday as a partnership between Border Trust and Northern Rivers-based organisation Enova Energy, following lengthly discussions throughout 2018.
It will allow customers to purchase electricity from a mix of solar energy and energy off the national grid, sourced by the retailer.
Enova Energy managing director Tony Pfeiffer said he believed the Border could replicate what the organisation is already successfully doing in the Northern Rivers, including investing some of the profits into providing renewable energy for community halls and housing.
“It was always one of our aims to take the model elsewhere and when the Border Trust people approached us, we thought what a great opportunity to do it with such a motivated and switched on group of people,” he said.
“Half of the net proceeds flow back into the Border community to be used for Border Trust to help run the business, but also to feed into the community foundation.
“They can use it for their grants and focus on benefits for their community.”
Enova Energy has only been in operation for about two years and, for now, is focused more on using renewable energy sourced from homes and public buildings than big solar farms.
Mr Pfeiffer said the goal was to provide premium feed-in tariffs for people generating solar at their properties.
“By doing that, making putting solar on your roof more economic, we’re effectively buying that solar and then reselling it back into the community. It works well that way,” he said.
“We want to encourage more renewables in the Albury-Wodonga community as part of that whole process.”
Interested parties have been encouraged to sign up as a customer or consider buying shares in Enova Energy and can find out more information online at www.enovaenergy.com.au.
