She told The Border Mail when launching her campaign a candidate for Benambra she would step down as mayor at the October 30 meeting.
But that changed in the past week because Cr O’Connor said “there are a number of councillors who have asked me to do so”.
In a statement released at 12.40pm Tuesday, she confirmed she had stepped aside from 6am.
“I would like to thank my fellow councillors and the residents of Indigo Shire over the past two years,” she said.
“During my time as mayor we made Indigo Shire a better place to live and stood up for our residents.”
Cr O’Connor had originally planned to take leave from Indigo Council from October 31, but a spokesman confirmed that leave has now started immediately.
She will not be at Tuesday night’s meeting to cast a vote in the election for her replacement as mayor.
The Indigo Council meeting will be held at the council chambers in Beechworth from 6pm.
