Technical information and resources include dry season preparedness, farm business planning and risk management, animal health and welfare, feed budgeting, on-farm stock water availability and management, soil and land management, irrigation and water-use efficiency and stock containment area site selection and management.
Stock containment areas are a carefully selected, fenced section of the property which is set up to periodically contain livestock.
They are primarily used to protect soil and pasture resources during or after adverse seasons or events such as fire, droughts, late autumn breaks. There are several benefits of containing livestock in a SCA, including:
- facilitation of livestock feeding, watering, monitoring and handling.
- containment of weeds brought onto the property with imported feeds.
- protection and faster recovery of pastures.
- less chance of soil erosion or damage to paddocks.
- control of shelter and shade for animals.
SCAs need to be well planned and should include consideration of size, location, feeding, water supply and shade. Agriculture Victoria staff provide technical information to assist landholders with SCA site selection and design planning, as well as livestock management.
If you are interested in further information or attending upcoming events, including on the design and management of SCAs, please contact Ian Gamble at Agriculture Victoria, Rutherglen on (02) 6030 4528.
