Incumbent Liberals MP Bill Tilley said people wanted better trains and relief from cost of living pressures.
“We’ll also put $2700 back in the average person’s pocket by cutting electricity and gas bills, cheaper water bills, free text books for state secondary students and other measures,” he said.
“If we form government we’ll also put more than $18 million into local projects – schools, sporting fields, halls and tourism.
“The fact is independents can’t do that.”
Independent Jenny O’Connor pointed to her work as Indigo mayor advocating for for Beechworth High School funding, saving Murray Goulburn jobs and fighting for Stanley’s groundwater to be protected.
“I have clear local policies that will make our communities better. This includes a regional deal to support small business and build the infrastructure we need to grow, “ she said
“I will change the Water Act to give rural towns a say over who has access to their water.”
Ms O’Connor said she believed Benambra would vote for change.
Jacqui Hawkins said she was “a truly independent candidate” because she had never been a member of a political party.
“I’ve seen the lack of investment in our region as a safe seat and I am determined to listen to your needs and deliver the change we deserve,” she said. “I stand for a vision for the future of Benambra. One that is of a vibrant community that attracts and retains our young people, supports it families to thrive and supports the enormous pride we have in our farming community.”
Greens candidate John Bardsley appealed to voters’ vision for the future.
“I want the people of Benambra to have the opportunity to vote 1 for the most progressive policies that will benefit them, their communities and their children,” he said.
The Labor Party did not respond to a request for comment.
