Councillors on Monday endorsed a recommendation to engage SHK to undertake the process of finding a replacement for current boss Patience Harrington.
The $65,000 will include $10,000 being earmarked for advertising the position.
SHK was one of four companies that responded after quotes were sought from seven firms.
The others to reply were Davidson, McArthur and Page Executive.
Details of their quotes and services were classified confidential and not included in the council agenda.
Mayor Anna Speedie lauded the role of employment consultants.
“Having worked with several of these companies in very recent times I think that we are going to be in exceptional hands,” Cr Speedie said.
A position description for the chief executive’s role cites seven “key selection criteria”.
They include relevant university qualifications, senior executive management experience, exceptional verbal and written communication skills and a talent for high level problem solving.
Cr Speedie will join deputy mayor Kat Bennett and councillor Libby Hall in determining a shortlist of three to five applicants.
They will then be interviewed by the entire council.
The successful candidate is not expected to be known until the new year.
She will finish up in January after having been helmswoman since 2012 and a part of the city’s staff for 17 years.
