Wodonga trainer Craig Widdison’s lightly-raced Wyangle has gained a reputation as a fast finisher, posting four wins from 10 starts.
“A couple of his wins have been a bit heart in the mouth, thinking he could win, but never looking likely until the last bit,” Widdison said.
“He’s got a great attitude, a great will to win and always seems to stick his head out at the right time.”
The five-year-old first showed his flair for thrilling wins a year ago when he stormed home in exciting style to win by less than a length at Albury
He followed that with an even closer victory last April and was 11th at the 400m mark at Albury in May, but again produced a barnstorming surge.
His last win was at Cootamundra in September.
Wyangle finished fourth at Sandown last start.
“I thought he was terrific, he drew wide so he had to go back further than he would have liked,” Widdison said.
“He made a long sustained run, he was still strong to the line, touch wood, if he can draw a (good) barrier he doesn’t have to get that far back and might be coming good at the right time.”
Wyangle has only contested 1000 to 1400m races.
“I don’t know what his limit is, he just keeps improving every time he does something,” Widdison said.
“He’s a really exciting horse, whether this one’s come up a little too quick for him, depending on the strength, I’m not sure.
“He’s answered all the questions we’ve put to him in races.”
Meanwhile, Widdison has also nominated Ruby Skye.
The five-year-old is also lightly-raced, grabbing three wins and a second in 11 starts.
“She was unlucky at Sandown a few starts ago, she was probably just a victim of circumstances, it was a little more positive and then there was no speed in the race, so she over-raced a bit,” Widdison said.
“I thought she did pretty well to be beaten by only two and a half lengths.
“I wouldn’t say there’s too much between them (Ruby Skye and Wyangle), they both know how to win.”
Acceptances close Wednesday morning with Darren Weir boasting two nominations in Dee I Cee and Romancer.
“It’s always tough when ‘Weiry’ decides to bring a couple, hopefully he stays home,” Widdison joked.
Dee I Cee has just passed a quarter of a million dollars in prizemoney, while Romancer has won five of 20 starts, including the $70,000 Donald Cup on November 18 with a dominant on-speed performance.
