Do our leaders care?
I was at once hopeful and sad seeing the students in QE II Square advocating for a safe climate. Hopeful because here was a brave, young, eager generation looking at the science and taking appropriate action, urging our politicians to stop making our climate worse. But I was sad because our children are having to show our ignorant and greedy, so called “leaders” the way forward.

As one of the students said, most of them there had greater knowledge of rational scientific evidence than nearly all our federal politicians. In a way, I hope that is true because if it isn’t, it’s even more appalling. It means our politicians know they are making the climate worse but don’t care.
Politicians who dared to criticise these brave students for asking for a safer climate should hang their heads in shame. These students are already better people than the parliamentarians who pretend there is no human induced climate change or that the pathetically inadequate measures they fight to minimise are anywhere near adequate or those who corrupt democracy by rolling over for fossil fuel industry “donations”. Do our leaders not hear their children cry or do they just not care?

‘Game’ has more options
I would like to make a few comments about the article in The Border Mail (November 29) titled “Deer Fear”. In 2017 , the Victorian Environment, Natural Resources and Regional Development committee of Parliament found that game classification and the exemption that allows for the destruction of deer on private land does not restrict the ability of landowners and land managers from controlling deer. The committee found that “game” status actually provides a wider range of management outcomes than pest status.
However if pest status is declared it would place a legal requirement on landholders to take all reasonable steps to prevent the spread of and as far as possible eradicate deer from their properties. This would create a financial burden on land owners not already undertaking control as well as stopping local deer farms from operating. As to “surveillance of hunters” on public land by GPS tracking, this would again be a cost to the government and once again punishes and hinders the law-abiding person rather than the person committing the illegal activities.
If landholders are having problems with deer on their properties and would like some help I would suggest getting in touch with SSAA Vic or ADA who both have farmer assist programs.

Malcolm versus Tony
There is only one way to determine what people think about whether Malcolm Turnbull or Tony Abbott should have led the Liberal parliamentary party – let Malcolm, as an independent, stand against Tony in Warringah at the next election. I would be happy to pay Malcolm’s nomination fee and wouldn’t even ask him to take time to electioneer.
