Two years after the club’s home ground was back on track after closure due to lead contamination, Thursday’s flash flood event cause water to inundate the change rooms.
About 70 centimetres of water still sat in the rooms on Friday morning, ruining the brand new carpeting which had just been laid down in preparation for the 2019 season.
Committee member Kevin Hogan said volunteers had done a good job to sweep out all the water on Thursday afternoon after the first rain event, but their work was immediately undone when rain returns in the evening.
“The water just ran straight back in through the door, so they just locked it and walked away,” he said.
“They put down this carpet about three months ago, to life the place up for next year.”
The Victorian government spent $3 million to clean up North Wangaratta Recreation Reserve and resurface the football oval.
Despite the new drainage, the magnitude of this week’s storm still caused flooding around the edges of the field.
Mr Hogan said the committee would have to check for any further damage to electrical equipment when the rooms dried out.
“I don’t know where we go from here,” he said.
“It’s just another hurdle that we’ll have to get over.”
