Based on date from previous years delays, RMS south west region director, Lindsay Tanner, said delays tend to start around December 20 and continue through to the New Year.
However, December 21, 23, 27 and 28 are traditionally the peak days where for people to travel on the Hume Highway. On those four days motorists can expect travel times to increase by up to 60 or 90 minutes.
Mr Tanner said while some of the peak days were predictable, leaving early in the morning isn’t always the best option.
He reminded drivers that on December 27, 28, as well as January 2, 3 and 4, the Hume Highway will be reduced to 80km/h from northbound from Gundagai between 7am and 3.30pm.

SES North East community resilience coordinator Yvonne Berrie said a driver reviver site would be running off the Hume at the Balmatturn rest area on Saturday from 9am to 6pm, and on Sunday from 8am to 2pm.
In NSW, there is a driver reviver site on Murray Street, Finley.
Ms Berrie said an estimated 17 per cent of motor vehicle fatalities related to sleep deprivation and drivers should take a break every two hours during long trips.
She said the reviver stations offer free tea and coffee.
“We’d much rather serve you a cuppa at a Toll Driver Reviver rest stop, than have to cut you out of a car,” she said.
