While crowds were down by about 1500 due to rain, Lavington Lions catering manager Wayne Sharrock said the club’s 28 volunteers had been kept flat out serving more than 700 kilograms of hot chips and other food.
“At 8.30am in the morning, people were running around and cornering off their own areas near the track,” he said.
“We’ve been steady throughout the night.”
Albury Harness Racing Club president Sue van de Ven said the few showers had compacted the race track well.
“It probably has scared a few people away, but we’ve had a few big groups in excess of 40 people, and that’s great because of the community atmosphere it creates,” she said.
“Happy new year to everyone in Albury and thank you for your support.”
