Wow, what a week!! What about those crazy reports of a massive fish kill during the week? What a joke!!
The announcement was obviously a political one. Water minister Niall Blair has been under a tad of pressure regarding the massive man-made problems and well-documented fish kills in the Darling River.
Was it a coincidence that he was at a meeting and facing even more media scrutiny when the ‘Massive Lake Hume Fish Kill’ was announced?
Obviously trying to deflect attention from the real problem, he jumped at the chance to point the finger and say “Look, it’s happening everywhere, it’s not our fault”.
The initial press release said 1800 fish were dead, quickly followed by 1600 fish, then 1200, then later by 60.
I still haven’t seen a picture of more than five in one spot and it’s obviously been a fisho that’s just left his carp on the bank.
It’s hard not to be suspicious when a NSW minister sends out a press release about a Victorian waterway with a ‘fish kill’ that neither the Victorian authorities nor the EPA were aware of.
Politics at its worst!
All that’s left to do now for the people of Albury/Wodonga is convince fishos, holiday makers and anyone that was considering a trip to our area and heard those reports, that the water in the lake is fine, yes, you can eat the fish you catch and it’s fine to swim in Lake Hume, please don’t cancel your trip!
Thanks Mr Blair!
At A Glance
Dartmouth (70%): Well worth a visit at night for a feed of yabbies or maybe a troll early in the day but, to be honest, I haven’t spoken to anyone brave enough to go up there this week.
Streams: would be rising in temp a little and starting to make things hard for those trout in the lower sections.
I’d be heading up into the headwaters as much as possible where the water should be slightly cooler, a little more oxygenated and where reports late last week were still pretty good.
The Mitta should have dropped a little as they draw it down to that 3800 meg mark for the next week or so which should be fantastic for those planning a trip up that way over the long weekend.
Despite being a tad high it’s been producing a few cod and some decent trout lately.
Cindy Rapsey picked up a decent cod during the week casting a lure or two about with partner Trevor Bent and Trev had a good fish up chasing his lure a couple of times without nailing it too.
Lake Hume (35.6%): is still going okay if you can find them.
A couple of Compleat Angler customers did well late in the week, picking up reasonable numbers of keeper-size reddies on small yabbies.
If you can catch a couple of small reddies to slip back over as bait, that’s definitely the way to get some better quality fish.
Hayden Burles picked up some good reddies on a mix of reasonably large yabbies and flicking plastics about early in the week.
Blowring (35%): not at its best over the past few weeks but keen anglers putting in the effort are still nailing the odd good cod. Reddies are still only just up that way too.
Wyangla Dam (41%): is a pretty good destination if you’re a cod fisho with reports of cod in reasonable numbers and some decent fish among them.
