Mahady plans to relocate to Melbourne and faces the dilemma of playing suburban football or travelling back to the Border.
His departure would be a huge blow for the Hoppers after fellow key backman Tom Gallaway recently decided to test himself at SANFL club West Adelaide.
Mahady has also been targeted by district league clubs in recent months.
The athletic backman returned to Bunton Park last season after spending three years with Sydney University in the NEAFL.
North Albury will field one of the youngest sides in the competition this season with first-year coach Isaac Muller losing the bulk of his experienced players including Daniel Leslie, Schmidt, Lachie Taylor-Nugent and Shaun Mannagh.
