Multiple people made Triple-0 calls on Monday afternoon after spotting thick smoke coming from the area behind the former Woodstock Centre in Lavington.
Firefighters were alerted about 4.45pm and Albury Central Fire Station commander Jeff Edwards said calls had been made by concerned nearby residents and members of the public who saw the smoke.
“We got responded after Triple-0 calls to a large area of grass alight,” he said.
“On arrival we could see large plumes of smoke going into the air.
“It was fairly chaotic with neighbours around, concerned for their premises, with the dry heat and the dry weather we’ve had.
“So our main concern here was to get as many appliances on the ground as possible, as quickly as possible, to ensure that the fire didn’t spread any further than it already had.”
IN OTHER NEWS:
Firefighters in three trucks attended and the incident was brought under control after about 35 minutes.
The fire appeared to have started in a wood and tin structure.
A makeshift camping area appeared to have been set up in the middle of the green wedge.
