PATRICK Stow’s decision to take up running has paid immediate dividends with the Albury athlete winning the Cumberoona Run.
Stow, 23, only took up the sport last November after his football career with Tallangatta league club Dederang-Mt Beauty was cut short by shoulder problems.
He won the eight kilometre race in 26 minutes, 24 seconds.
“I didn’t expect to win at all,” Stow said.
“I was just going for a run.
“It’s the first time I’ve done the run.
“I’m really enjoying it at the moment.”
Stow, who will now target the Wangaratta Half Marathon, won the race from former winner Luke Preston.
In the women, Katie Scammell finished ahead of training partner Callista Race-Stelling in 30 minutes, 56 seconds.
It was her first run in the race since she took out a division as a junior.

Organiser Bill Pearce said the decision to bring forward the race proved a winner with the Sienna Daisy able to compete due to higher water levels.
“It was great to see because it’s been a while,” Pearce said.
“The Sienna Daisy came home in 26th position.”
About 120 runners competed in the fun run which started at Noreuil Park.
