The savage attack by Lukas Lee Hines was not an isolated incident.
Albury Local Court heard on Tuesday that Hines had served time in jail over violence previously inflicted on the victim, the mother of his two children.
It was that jail sentence that led to the final break-down of their six-year on-again, off-again relationship.
On his release, Hines, 23, moved in to his mother's West Albury home, but now sits in Junee jail bail refused over this latest string of offences.
Hines pleaded guilty on Tuesday to charges of destroy or damage property, break and enter with intent to commit a serious indictable offence and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Charges of break and enter with intent to commit a serious indictable offence and aggravated break and enter and commit a serious indictable offence of violence were withdrawn.
"The accused has an extensive criminal history involving domestic violence offences towards the same victim," police said.
The court was told the victim left her home on August 22, 2018, about 6pm to visit her aunt's place.
At the time, the children were being cared for elsewhere.
The victim began walking home about 9pm to 10pm and on getting there, fell asleep for a couple of hours before being woken by Hines "going off".
Hines was trying to get in to the house, but she would not let him in.
She slept in the lounge room.
About 7am, she locked the house and again went to her aunt's home, then returned soon after.
On seeing Hines walking towards her from a park, she told him not to follow her as she was going to contact the police.
"While the victim waited for police ... she could hear the sound of glass smashing and banging coming from the direction of her home," the court was told.
When she returned home she discovered a smashed laundry window, a kicked-in back door, a crack in her son's television and three broken lights inside.
"The victim entered the home and the accused began arguing with (her) due to being jealous when she goes drinking," police said.
"The victim walked towards the victim and hit her with a closed fist, which contacted the victim's left eye."
Hines will be sentenced on April 2.
