McDonald-coached teams have won Australia's two domestic titles this season, including Sunday's extraordinary comeback win by the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League.
"Andrew McDonald will end up coaching a International team one day," Vaughan tweeted hours after the stunning win over the Melbourne Stars.
And Cricket Victoria General Manager of Cricket Operations, Shaun Graf, believes it could be our national team.
"I think there's a real chance, over the next couple of years, if any opportunity arises, he could certainly coach at an international level and I would like to think that would be Australia, I think he's got a lot to offer Australian cricket," McDonald's boss said.
The 37-year-old may have to wait his turn though after Justin Langer signed a four-year deal last May.
McDonald was appointed the Elite Performance Director for English county outfit Leicestershire in November, 2014, and transformed the club's on-field fortunes.
The former Test cricketer was then appointed Victoria coach in August, 2016.
I would like to think that would be Australia, I think he's got a lot to offer Australian cricket.
- Shaun Graf
He won the Sheffield Shield on debut and is chasing a hat-trick of titles this season, with Victoria holding a nine-point lead in the Shield with four matches left.
"He's got a good rapport with the players, he's quite a deep thinker of the game, he loves the sport and loves the tactics behind it as well," Graf said.
"He suits the modern style, he's very much a thinking man's coach against someone who will jump straight away, he thinks his way through any issues.
"Andrew also works really well with his group of coaches, it's not just about him, he uses all his support staff and they all feel part of the decision-making process."
