The village was the home of Prince Charles, Princess Diana and Prince William for several weeks in 1983.
The “old” Hume Highway through Woomargama will be renamed Woomargama Way once the village is bypassed.
Greater Hume Council last month endorsed the name as suggested by a local bypass advisory committee.
The only names it came up with were Woomargama Way and Woomargama Drive.
The Prince and Princess of Wales used Woomargama homestead as the base for their Australia tour and the baby prince reportedly took his first steps there.
Owners Gordon and Margaret Darling lent it to them during the period, though some villagers met the royal couple.
Meanwhile, work on the nine-kilometre $265 million bypass is continuing west of Woomargama with the Roads and Traffic Authority yesterday saying it would be opened in December.
However, it is possible the road would open earlier if there was a run of good weather.
Abigroup, the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority and Sinclair Knight Merz are working as an alliance on the bypass, which will carry a four-lane divided road over the slopes of Mount McKenzie.
Bypass traffic will be able to travel 110 km/h on the bypass.
A similar alliance led by Abigroup recently began work on the $247 million Holbrook bypass, which is due to be completed in 2013.
Leighton leads an alliance building the $238 million Tarcutta bypass, also due to open this year.
