State Emergency Service volunteers were called to the property about 7.40pm as wind, lightning and rainfall hit the area.
Deputy controller Greg Nankervis said the whole roof had been stripped from the home and landed in the rear yard.
"There was extensive damage to the outside of the building, with the roof missing, but there was also reasonably extensive damage internally with water," he said.
"It's pretty rare that we get an entire roof ripped off a house."
The volunteers covered the residents' possessions and furniture with plastic sheeting and spent about 90 minutes on scene.
No-one was at home at the time.
