The former Murray United striker, who was raised in Wodonga, shared a float with fellow monarch, television weather presenter Jane Bunn, as the Moomba parade passed through Melbourne on the Victoria's Labour Day.
"It was great, just seeing everybody being happy and the kids getting involved and waving at every single float - the smiles, it was a good vibe," Thompson said.
"Every Victorian knows the Moomba festival and how prestigious it is to the city and Victoria.
"Most of my adult life has been in Melbourne so just to be considered (for monarch) was great and to be in it was awesome.
"It was pretty special, I didn't want it to end."
Thompson also was in the Birdman Rally where homemade craft are flown into the Yarra River for charity.
He is the second ex-Melbourne Victory player to be monarch, Harry Kewell had the role in 2012.
