An understrength Wangaratta produced a strong performance against Goulburn Valley powerhouse Kyabram on Saturday.
The teams were level after the first three periods involving senior players, with the reserve grade outfits contesting the last three.
"We had seven players out so we got out of it what we wanted to," Wangaratta coach Luke Morgan.
A long-time GV star himself, Morgan also missed the game, along with Doug Strang medallist Michael Newton.
Meanwhile, an inaccurate Wangaratta Rovers fell to Whittlesea, 11.6 (72) to 6.16 (52).
The Hawks were missing at least a third of their best team.
"We had no injuries, Ed Dayman kicked three and looked promising, Raven Jolliffe was outstanding and hit the post a few times," coach Daryn Cresswell said.
"Patty Hourigan was pretty solid and Noah Amery played well, I was pretty happy to be honest."
