The vehicle had lost control, skidded sideways, flipped and hit the tree on a median strip.
SES volunteers were needed to free the 22-year-old driver, two 19-year-old passengers and a 20-year-old passenger.
The four male survivors were transported to Albury hospital and one was later flown to Canberra.
The driver was in a critical condition following the crash.
Detective Inspector Winston Woodward said the car appeared to have been travelling from Sydney to Melbourne.
