The Ovens and Murray and Tallangatta leagues will start their seasons tomorrow, much to the delight of players and supporters alike.
As a football and netball fan, hope springs eternal that this could be the year your team finally salutes in September. That six months of hard work will come to fruition at the business end of the season.
But, in an added bonus for footy fans this year, it's already the business end of the season for three of our region's best players.
Darcy Vescio, Gabby Pound and Jess Foley will do battle at Adelaide Oval on Sunday when the Crows host Carlton in the AFLW grand final.
The Blues have been in the headlines for the wrong reasons recently, with idiotic trolls making disparaging comments about a spectacular photo of star player Tayla Harris.
IN OTHER NEWS:
What has been uplifting about the whole saga, though, has been the response of the football community which has taken a stand and demanded that this sort of behaviour isn't acceptable.
That's the great thing about sport, it brings people and communities together in times of adversity.
Speaking of adversity, the Albury Racing Club encountered unprecedented levels of it a week ago when a downpour caused the Gold Cup to be abandoned.
It was revealed yesterday that Racing NSW has opted against rescheduling the cup because it wanted to avoid clashes with upcoming SDRA feature races. Instead, an additional race meeting has been scheduled for Albury on Thursday, April 18.
On one hand, it's a huge blow that Albury has been denied the opportunity to run its Gold Cup, but on the other hand, the club has at least been able to salvage something from the disaster.
Let's hope, with a 90 per cent chance of 20-40mm of rain predicted for today, that tomorrow's Cricket Albury-Wodonga grand final isn't decided by the weather.
Whether you're a football, netball or cricket fan, may the best team reign this weekend.
