The power forward has suffered a knee injury that is likely to keep him out for much of the season.
"He'll be potentially a fair while on the sidelines so we'll have to work through that," Bandits coach Brad Chalmers said.
"It's a bit of a tough one in terms of getting an injury at the start of the year but this is the nature of the sport and you have to rally around and keep pushing.
"We haven't had a lot of luck with injuries over the years and that seems to have continued.
"It's a blow, but at the end of the day it's a next man up mentality so we'll work through it as a group."
Newton, who was born and raised in New Zealand, previously played for the Bandits back in 2017.
