Three Wangaratta Fire Brigade appliances and 12 firefighters went to the Warby Street house about 12.30pm after neighbours heard the sound of smoke alarms.
Senior station officer Carl Stibilj said brigade members then ventilated the home to clear the smoke, with the only damage being to the front door from the forcible entry.

"There was actually smoke issuing from the dwelling when the brigade arrived," he said.
"It had the potential to burn up into the roof cavity via the flue in the kitchen or the rangehood."
The female occupant arrived home about 20 minutes after the firefighters attended.
"She was very apologetic, but you know, accidents happen," Mr Stibilj said.
"Anyone who's cooking needs to be aware that they shouldn't leave anything on the stove unattended at any time."
